NMSU basketball player Mike Peake shot, UNM student dead: What we know.

LAS CRUCES — A University of New Mexico student has died, and a New Mexico student-athlete is recovering from a gunshot wound following an incident at the UNM campus early Saturday morning. Place later in the day.

The New Mexico State Police are leading an investigation into a deadly shooting at the UNM campus. Police released a statement on Saturday afternoon noting that one person was killed in the shooting, but related police records are not yet available.

In a statement, police said there was an altercation on campus around 3 a.m. Saturday between a 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man.

A 19-year-old boy, later identified as a UNM student, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

A 21-year-old junior, Peake is the starting power forward for the basketball team.

A native of Chicago, Peek spent most of his high school years playing for Kansas. The 6.7-foot, 218-pound forward played for Georgia and Austin in the 2021-22 season before he came to NMSU.

Peake is one of two players returning to the Aggie hoops team this year. In his first two games for the team, he averaged 9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2 blocks in just over 20 minutes.
